Vianode, a joint venture between Elkem, Hydro and Altor, has invested the equivalent of almost 200 million euros in the construction of a new battery materials plant in Norway. The decision is seen as an important step on the way to building a complete battery value chain in Norway for the European market.

More than 100,000 tons of graphite material

The industrial plant on Norway's Herøya peninsula is expected to produce anode graphite for around 20,000 electric vehicles per year by 2024. On average, an electric vehicle currently contains up to 70 kilograms of graphite materials, which are an essential part of the battery. The spending, however, marks the start of a larger investment plan. The construction of the plant is being carried out in parallel with preparations for a second phase, in which battery materials for two million electric vehicles per year are to be produced by 2030. This is intended to cover a significant share of the global e-mobile market. Vianode is aiming for 1,400 tons of graphite material by 2024 and around 140,000 tons for 2030.
